State of Michigan Engine Performance and Tune Up Practice Test

The device that acts as the brain of the engine management system, processing sensor data to control performance and emissions, is the Powertrain Control Module. It gathers inputs from many sensors—such as oxygen sensors, coolant temperature, airflow, position sensors, and more—and uses programmed maps and logic to adjust fuel delivery and ignition timing, plus other actuators like the EGR valve and idle control. By continuously tuning the air-fuel mixture and ignition based on real-time data, it optimizes power, drivability, fuel economy, and emissions, ensuring the catalytic converter can operate effectively. The oxygen sensor feeds feedback to the module to fine-tune the mixture, but it does not manage the system by itself. Ignition coils simply provide spark, and the catalytic converter reduces emissions after combustion; neither processes sensor data to manage engine performance.
